Japanese Garden Recommendation - Shosei-en Garden

Where should you travel around Yumeyakata?

If you have a tight schedule and just want to wear a kimono and find a place to take pictures around Yumeyakata, in addition to Kiyomizu Temple, there is also a Japanese style garden: Shosei-en Garden.

Just walk 10 minutes!

This Japanese Garden is Higashi Honganji.-Trifoliate Orange Villa

Because it is not as famous as the Kiyomizu Temple, tourists are relatively less and it's more convenient to take photos.

This garden is very pretty. Strolling slowly around is enough to make one afternoon.
Highly recommended to everybody!

Date taken: 2014. 04. 16

Location: Shosei-en Garden

Opening hours: 9:00 ~ 16:00

Address: Shomen-dori Ainomachi Higashi-iru, Shimogyo-ku, Kyoto 600-8190, Japan

2014.05.15 Kamo-sai

In the post about "Saioo," we had mentioned about the coming-soon Aoi -sai Festival. Is there anybody happened to be there? We would like to share some photos on that day today!

Aoi-sai has a formal name as "Kamo-sai." This is one of the biggest three festival held in Kyoto and had a long history. Kamo-sai was first held for pray for good harvest. Different from the well-known Gion-matsuri, which was for civilians, Kamo-sai was been in charge of the royal court of Heian period. Even in today it has maintained a solemn setting. This festival is not for celebration but for praying for blessing.

The ceremony is divided into two parts. One is the parade, and the other is the ritual held in both two Kamo shrines through which the parade passes. The parade is composed of members in Heian period clothes. As you can see, it is just like all these people are walking out of the history!

For the festival is always held in the middle of May when it is really easy to rain, this year the parade was also walk in rain, without surprise lol
Don't you agree it is really interesting seeing such an ancient clothes with plastic umbrella from convenient stores?

It's tea time!!

Let me introduce "Toraya" to you today.

The Cake shop "Toraya" has also been introduced last year by staff Chien. Last time, we had tried ice maccha (the Japanese powdered green tea) and Japanese confectionery. This time we ordered the spring special set (right) and red-bean set.

There was steamed bread, a Japanese sweet and a small cup of red-bean tea in the spring special set. The appearance could already show how yummy it is, I suggest. As for the red-bean set, it seemed to be very sweet but actually with the unsweetened jelly it was just good! Even topped with honey it won't be too sweet to eat.

Also the atmosphere of the shop was excellent! We chose the outdoor seat for this time. The comfortable breeze and the tasty snakes made us reluctant to leave.

Maybe you can try it yourself next time you passing by Kyoto Imperial Palace!!

Summer is coming soon!!

From June 7th, there will be an option in addition to kimono for you, "yukata".

Here is the picture of yukata. Can you tell the difference of this two Japanese clothes?

Yukata is the summer wearing in ancient Japan. In other words, you will feel cooler than wearing in kimono. You wear three layers of clothes, four layers sometimes, when wearing kimono but you only need to wear two for yukata.

Also, the patterns of yukata are more lively and colorful than kimono.

In such a hot weather in Japan, we really suggest you to chose the yukata as your special memory in Kyoto!

"Hono-enbu" is an event hosted by Shimogamo-jinja Shrine every May 4th in cooperation with the Society for the Promotion of Japanese Classical Martial Arts. It is a demonstration of Japanese classical martial arts, Budo. This is one of the big event in Shimogamo-jinja Shrine. But different from the most of ritual held in May, Hono-enbu don't really related to the great festival Kamo-sai.
This martial-art demonstration including halberd, Japanese sword, judo, etc. Those who is interested in Japanese martial art shouldn't miss this pageant! In addition, you can see the demonstration in such a close distance that you could even feel the wind made by the sword blowing through your hair!! Also, the solemn atmosphere of the demonstration makes the whole event not only so very cool but within the soul and the spirit of Budo.
